Play the Fable

A fable of the ascent, after Zarathustra. The fire beneath the meadow is waking, and one road remains: up. Lead the tribe as its chief, keep its body alive, answer its six voices, and forge its soul toward greatness before the world-fire arrives.

Best played with sound on. Your decrees are limited; the Fire is not. If the frame is cramped, open the game full screen.

The Premise

For a generation the tribe has lived in the meadow. The grass is soft, the stream is slow, and the old chief taught that to want little is to be good. The Wise Man has read the sign: the age is burnt out from within, and in thirty days the meadow will be a lake of flame. The tribe that reaches the summit will be something greater than the tribe that departs.

Each day you enact decrees, march, and answer the road's questions. Rivals challenge, voices turn, and every choice returns later with interest.

The Soul of the Tribe

Three tensions pull at the tribe's soul — Horizon, Identity, and Ambition — the same three axes mapped by the Zarathustran compass. Extremes breed woe, save one: there is no such thing as too much Greatness, and the mountain will be climbed by no tribe without it.

Take the compass quiz to map your own soul along the axes the tribe walks, then see whether you can carry a whole people to the peak.
