Weakness is rife today. Faith is missing today. Many live isolated from those around them and without purpose or expression. They lay idle with no representatives of greatness to inspire and encourage them forward. The idle allow weakness to infect the world around them, for they do not have around them the essence of greatness. Before them lay worthless things, promoted by worthless men. They pine for the best things, yet are not willing to take the plunge into their down-going, to seek them out and promote them.
In the world even the best things are worthless without those who represent them: those representers, the people call great men.
Little do the people understand what is great — that is to say, the creating agency. But they have a taste for all representers and actors of great things.
Thus Spake Zarathustra, 12. The Flies in the Marketplace
When men seek change, they latch onto that which is present and available to them. Men will accept the structure another has built, and so they will work together to build it into a greater form. The man of today is given little structure and so builds little, and those who seek to build latch onto the structures laid before them, that produce little. Only when a man becomes the representer of his fellow men do great things arise. The representer of man's desires is the beacon that calls all men forth into greatness, for man desires to be great and work towards greatness — towards the Overman.
All men recognise greatness, and all men work towards them. Yet not all men are destined to lead them. Many men seek to be great and indulge in their own great feats. They may seek greatness in physical prowess, in the mastery of a trade, in learning of the natural world, and some may seek greatness in inspiring others greatness. The taste is there in these men, and while they may not be experts in the matters of their fellow man, they understand that a man is the representer of great things. Each of these men are an actor, shaping the world in their vision, in the vision of greatness and the Overman.
Around the devisers of new values revolveth the world: — invisibly it revolveth. But around the actors revolve the people and the glory: such is the course of things.
Spirit, hath the actor, but little conscience of the spirit. He believeth always in that wherewith he maketh believe most strongly — in himself!
Tomorrow he hath a new belief, and the day after, one still newer. Sharp perceptions hath he, like the people, and changeable humours.
To upset—that meaneth with him to prove. To drive mad—that meaneth with him to convince. And blood is counted by him as the best of all arguments.
Thus Spake Zarathustra, 12. The Flies in the Marketplace
Towards those great men who are the representers of new values, do the actors go. Actors who take upon themselves the necessity of action, and of acting. Of acting with purpose, and inspiring their men. These actors necessarily are the commanders of men and of the new age of values, of new societies which shape the world in the vision of the Overman. Only for ultimate purpose do men act, the men who build the houses and farms, build for Overman. The men who refuse to accept the world as it is, strive for a new one to give unto the Overman. And to the Overman do all men who seek to become great venture, for man is the path to the Overman.
Rather would I succumb than disown this one thing; and verily, where there is succumbing and leaf-falling, lo, there doth Life sacrifice itself — for power!
Thus Spake Zarathustra, 34. Self-Surpassing
When men see the need to work together they see a common goal and a common sacrifice. Only through their labour, their efforts, and their beliefs in these greater values can they succeed in bringing man to the Overman. Men who lay idle and toil, who succumb to weakness rather than rising above it, are men who have failed to follow the actors or are misguided by deceivers. Every man needs a king who guides him, and every king needs men who support him. Kings it is time for, and new values, and for men to become kings among themselves, and kings of their own realms of greatness.
